windows slowing and crashing

When using the menu bars on XP they have been getting
slower and slower until it crashes. I'm a computer novice
and would appreciate any help,

Have you done any of the following recently:

Run CHIDES
Defrag your Hard Drive
Clean out all your Temp Internet Files & Cookies
