Problems after Windows XP re-install.

My PC came ready installed with windows XP and with a rescue disk, but not
the original windows xp disk. Lately I have been plagued with system crashes
and software problems, so I decided to start from scratch and re-install xp
from the rescue disk. It reinstalled the original basic xp ok, but when SP1
was installed from microsoft update,I noticed that the pc was getting slower
and slower until it almost stopped. Then when SP2 was installed, Internet
Explorer worked for a few minutes, then "page cannot be displayed" would show
on any web site I tried to access. I have since uninstalled SP2 so that I can
access the internet, but it gets so slow that I have to keep restarting the
computer. Can anyone give me any idea of what I can do to fix these problems
please?

Whatever problem you suffered from in the beginning probably was not solved
by the rescue disk. Using it also must have changed various files and
settings ungracefully, so installing everything again on top of it could
cause these performance problems. I am not exactly sure what your rescue
disk does because there are so many products that call themselves that, but I
think I could help further if I knew.

Your situation sounds bad enough to warrant doing a reformat and reinstall.

Thanks for your reply Will.
The rescue disk came from the maker of the pc "Carrera SSC", (who have since
gone out of business!). It is called " XP Home Recovery CD" and has the
motherboard type printed on it " ASUS P4S533-E ".
When using the disk, three options are given, I cant remember the exact
words, but they are something like: 1.Return the operating system back to as
supplied and preserve documents. 2. Return the OS back to as supplied, but
not preserve documents. 3. Prepare hard drive for installation of a new
microsoft operating system.
When I re-installed the OS, I used option 2.
