Windows Shut Down due to RPC Call

P

Peter Lehrman

Recently I installed XP onto my home computer that had
Windows2000 running. Now, unexpectedly, Windows gives me
a Shut Down error due to "RPC". Then the system simply
shuts itself down.

Why does this happen and how can I stop it?

Hi Peter,

Your system is infected by RPC (W32.Blaster) Worm. This is causing the system to shutdown abnormally. Blaster worm is quickly spreading over the internet. Thousands and thousands of computers are affected.

CAUSE: You have not enabled the firewall while browsing the internet and not patched the system with latest Microsoft WindowsUpdate hotfixes.

A tool is available to remove Blaster worm and Nachi worm infections from computers that are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP:

Peter This is caused by the W32.Blaster.Worm. Go to symantec.com and they have a W32.Blaster.Worm Removal Tool.

Peter Windows XP has a Firewall built in. 1- On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2- Click the Network and Internet Connections category.
(If the Network and Internet Connections is not visible, click Switch to Category View under Control Panel on the left side of the Control Panel window. )
Click Network Connections.
4- Right-click the Dial-UP, Lan, or High-Speed Internet connection that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Properties from the context menu.
5- On the Advanced tab, under Internet connection Firewall, select Protect my computer or network, and then click OK.
The Windows XP firewall is now enable.

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
