Windows Shortcut Variables

I am setting up a roaming profile that is to be used on
both Windows 2000 and XP machines. Everything is working,
but I have a slight problem. The calculator and notebook
icons do not show up correctly on the XP machines. I have
found that the shortcuts are looking
into "C:\winnt\system32\calc.exe", which does not exist on
Windows XP for obvious reasons. I changed the shortcut to
use %SystemRoot% thinking it would be "windows" for XP
and "winnt" for 2000. Unfortunetly it seems that since
the profile is stored on a Windows 2000 machine it is
always pulling winnt as the system root. Is there a way
for this to work appropriately?

You are basically faced with a common problem when using roaming profiles in
the setup you describe.
Apparently those OS versions were installed with 'default' setting, not
taking into account the setup you are trying to use here.
If you need to be able to use roaming profiles on different machines (duh,
that's what they are for!) then you also need to ensure that relevant paths
are named identically accross the board.
The (system) variables you are referring to will alway relate to the actual,
current machine namings.
So inevitably if your machine's systemroot happens to be called winnt, it'll
read that and if it's called windows it'll read that.

bummer, ain't it, cause to get this working properly you'll be faced with
the task of setting up some of those machines afresh in order to get correct
(identical) path references.

That's what I was afraid of. I guess users can get along with 2 icons
looking bad buried in the start menu. Thanks for the confirmation though.
