Windows setup problems

I have a winXP Professional running on IBM Thinkpad. MY
CD ROM driver got corrupted somehow (I installed and
uninstalled Easy CD Creator 4.0 which is not compatible
with XP). To get the CDROM to work, I tried repairing the
installation and the whols system crashed.

I am not able to start in safe mode.
In recovery console, I am not able to see my directories.
I tried making a new installation and that failed because
the CDROM drive is not avaialble.

How do I get back to the orignial installation that was
working without the CDROM access, so that I can back up
my system, and do a clean install?
