I ran the upgrades to the system.

I get windows security alert.

I checked Norton and everything is fine.

How do I get rid of the "x and red shield on the start
bar?

Everything is *not* fine - Norton cannot communicate with the Security
Center - yet.

The problem is with Symantec (Norton) Antivirus. Symantec acknowledges this
as a problem and has released and retracted a patch for the 2004 product
line once already. If you go to Symantec's web page and look here
(specifically):

http://snipurl.com/9aob

You will see that the 2005 product line already includes the necessary
patches/upgrade. The new release of the 2004 product line patch/upgrade is
expected sometime in late September/early October.

This feature is a bit ridiculous, isn't it? After all, Norton has been
looking after itself for - how long 10-15 years? Microsoft seems to lay
the blame on Symantec, however that isn't entirely true since Zonealarm
has no problem whatsoever and can monitor NAV as far back as 2001. Funny
how Microsoft seems to want you to upgrade everything...
To get rid of the shield, make sure your Norton Antivirus is set to get
automatic live updates and do a manual Live Update to make sure the
components are up to date (Norton doesn't update itself with Automatic
Live Updates, only the Virus Defs). If you had to restart and the
problem is still there - double click the red shield icon in the system
tray. This will open up Windows Security Center. Under the heading
Antivirus click RECOMMENDATIONS. Put a check mark in the check box that
says "I have an antivirus....(etc)". Click OK. Voila - the deed is done,
no more red shield.
