windows restarts mysteriously 10-20 times per day

my computer just restarts randomly every few minutes when
i am using it. will often restart when i am using matlab
or winamp or playing a game. it will also restart 8-10
times during the restart process (before getting to the
windows welcome screen). is this a hardware or software
problem?

Start here. Go to Control Panel|Administrative Tools and click on event
viewer. Look under system and look for errors and alerts. Double
clicking on an event will bring up a details box. You can go to the
bottom and click on a link for more information. This should tell you
what the error codes are about. Post back with info. It's impossible to
answer your question without more information.
