Windows restarts as soon as it goes into standby

I have recently changed how I connect my XP MCE desktop PC to my home network
from using a wireless connection to using a patch cable plugged into the
network card. Since doing this everytime I put the PC into standby mode it
restarts again after just a few seconds. This never used to happen with the
wireless connection, presumably because going into standby turned off the
wireless radio?

I have, however, found a way round this problem and that is to unplug the
network cable before putting the PC into standby. Once in standby I can plug
the cable in again and the PC stays in standby.

This is bit of a pain and I was wondering whether anyone had a way around
this issue?

In previous releases of windows I vaugely remember there being a 'wake up on
LAN' setting where you could control whether LAN activity would wake up the
PC or not but I can't seem to find this in XP.

Can anyone help?

Easiest thing first... I suspect that you have a shorted cable. Can you
try another one ? If so, and problem persists, repost and others may have
an idea.

Thanks for the advice, but a new cable did not help.

However, I did managed to solve the problem.

Solution was to make sure that the 'Allow this device to bring the computer
out of standby.' box is unchecked on the 'power management' tab for the
ethernet card configuration screen. This screen is accessed by clicking the
'configure' button on the 'General' tab of the 'Local Area Connection
Properties' dialogue box. This, in turn, is accessed by right clicking 'Local
Area Connection' in the network connections which is opened by choosing it
when either the Wireless or LAN icon is right clicked from the task bar.
