WIndows Repair ?

K

Keith (Southend)

For a few weeks now my computer suddenly flashes into a blue screen and
reboots. Sometimes it will do a short Scandisk, sometimes it will stall
asking press F1 to continue or run Safe Mode etc. It will always come
back into Windows desktop. The problem is it all feels very unstable and
unreliable, which worries me as I run a weather station on-line and use
a download manager to grab weather data at certain times f the day. I
use AVG Free, ADAware and Spybot, not forgetting MS AniSpyware.

I've looked at the Microsoft error messages... BAD_POOL_HEADER is one.

Also this one....

Depending on which situation is applicable to you, please do one of the

the device. If you know the manufacturer of the device, contact the
manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
* Some software, such as firewall and anti-virus software, also
installs drivers. If this problem occurred after you installed new

<snip>

I've not installed any new hardware and am not aware of any major new
software.
Without having to reformat the disc and start from scratch I was
wondering whether Windows Restore may find and fix the problem, assuming
it's a driver that's currupt somehere.

Firstly, what would be the best process of elimination to resolve this
problem?
and secondly, how do I get to Windows Repair using the XP Disk?
I'm trying to avoid having to reload all my programmes on again if I
can, although I am 99% backed up, so the main thing would be time, if I
had to start from scratch.

I'm not over familier with performing these tasks and don't want to do
anything silly :)

Many thanks in advance

You get to do a Repair by booting from the XP CD and opting to do a repair
install. (If you've upgraded to SP2 the CD must also be an SP2 CD.)

Be aware that once the repair install is done all updates/patches/hotfixes
will have to be downloaded and reinstalled. To help in this area go to:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and download the latest
version of AutoPatcher which has most of this stuff.
