Windows Registry

When you contain a virus, spyware or something else bad who is based to sit in
your registry, if you know the name.
Than you remove it Manually, do you need to change something else to?

This question is based on a problem i had before.
I had a virus who was molestrating my virusscanner and Regedit command.
So i restart my computer in safe mode.
And in safe mode regedit didn't shut down after 5 seconds when i started
regedit
And it worked so i deleted the files that where bound to the virus. in the
registry (regedit).
So i restarted the computer and it says i got unlicensed version and i
couldn't log in so i use the license key that is on a sticker attached to my
computer.
He said that license key was a false one. so i couldn't enter my computer.

Maybe i forgot an important step i had to take?

Altrough i reinstalled and formatted Windows XP now because it needed a
clean anyway.
But still the information would be nice for the future if the same problem
repeats.

Also a second question?
Is windows Spyware remover free? (yes because its beta) but does it stay
free when the official release there is?
Maybe suggestion to make it free for personal computers.

You need to be pretty sure about what you're doing if you're going to attempt
to remove a virus manually and it's far better to use a good AV program and
run regular scans to avoid becoming infected in the first place. You can
download the free version of "AVG" from http://www.grisoft.com

To avoid viruses sent by email, install "MailWasher Pro", download from
http://www.firetrust.com. It allows you to read emails directly off your
ISP's email server without the need to download them to your own PC first. It
also scans emails for viruses and other suspect applications.

As for Microsoft's anti-spyware utility, I understand from reports I've read
around the Web that MS proposes to incorporate it into Windows Vista in the
same way that IE is an intergral part of the operating system. So I think you
can safely say that it will remain a free download for the foreseeable
future.

Scrubber thank you for your information, but i forget an mayor detail.

I got licensed version of Norton Anti-virus when that virus/spyware came.
Since i am not really sure if it was an virus or spyware.
Only i know it blocked Norton anti-virus from scanning, every time i started
it it closes after 5-10 seconds scanning.
Than i downloaded some anti spyware they detected it the good ones, but a
mayor backstab of good anti-spyware software as soon you want to remove u
need to subscribe.
Since i am 17 years old i can't do that.
By do way the virus sends himself through MSN messenger. When u contain the
version you unwanted you send a message to everyone online with something
like "are you the real <MSN of message receiver> click here to check"
