Cannot Log On After Accidental Registry Item Deleted

I had a virus on my computer and the various antivirus and spyware removers I
have could not remove it (Pop up ad for Antivirus 2009). I used "regedit" to
look for anything "odd" (I am a novice!!) in HKEY Local Machine-Software.
Somewhere in -Windows I deleted something and I cannot remember what.

So now when the machine boots up and gets to the log on screen and I log on,
the screen says "loading your profile" or something like that and then says
"logging off".

I cannot revert to the "last good configuration" in safe mode because it was
set to "off" (per my Antivirus software support technician who had helped me
remove a similar virus recently).

I tried to boot from my Windows XP disc but cannot - the same thing happens
and I am logged off.

I don't have anything particularly important on the hard drive so I am
thinking of deleting everything and reloading all the software. But how do I
go about doing this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Antivirus 2009 sounds a very wacky malware to me...

Well, if you don't have anything important on the disk, you absolutely want to
format and reinstall Windows. Backup first tho just in case there is
something you need there.

If you don't know how to install Windows, you may want to ask a friend to do
that or a nearby computer technician. Don't forget to backup.

The usual reason for a looping logon process is an inability of Windows to
run the file "userinit.exe". This is curable but it requires quite an
effort, in particular if you lack relevant experience. A complete reload of
Windows is probably the most effective solution in your case. Set the BIOS
to use the CD drive as the primary boot device, then boot the machine with
your WinXP CD and follow the prompts.

Well, if u don't have anything important in the computer, reinstalling the
whole system will be much more easier for you. Will take about 30 minutes to
go.
Be sure you equiped the fresh system with antivirus and antispyware and
latest updates.

Meanwhile, scanning for viruses and spywares on the running system will take
you longer and the result may not really well worth it.

Hi, DryHeat2.7T. If deleting a registry key caused the problem then a System Restore should correct it (assuming that System Restore is turned on). Also, you should download and install a program called ERUNT to backup your registry. In any case, before deleting any registry key you should back it up by Exporting the key first. I succeeded in rebooting from my Wndows XP CD. I followed the prompts for
reinstallation and it gave me the option to repair. Now everything is working
and none of my "unimportant" files are affected. I don't get the pop ups fro
Antivirus 2009 though. I think a combination of the various malware tools I
have and the Windows XP repair could have something to do with this.

Nevertheless, I downloaded the Antivirus 2009 removal tool from
RemoveOnline.com (the actual software is by SpyNoMore) as recommended by Tim
Meddick, and it requires me to go to SpyNoMore's website to do a scan on my
computer. If it finds viruses, etc. I would have to buy the software in order
to remove them. Since I already have so many spyware/antivirus tools on my
computer, I decided not to purchase. When I try to Uninstall from the
program, it gives a screen which says, essentially, do you really want to
uninstall? If you click Yes, nothing happens. If you click No, of course
nothing happens. The link does tell you which files to remove manually and I
will try that later. User reports for this software are good.

The next link removal-tool.com has user comments that indicate it is itself
some kind of malware - people report all kinds of problems after using this
tool. So I decided not to use this tool.

And it will block access to reputable websites and who knows what else
it will change/break on your system.


Do you really want to trust someone that was banned from posting
directly to Microsoft Usenet servers, someone that has posted links to
pornographic materials on HIS WEBSITE, who's website is in the MVP HOST
Block list, and who provides a tool for your use that will block access
to reputable anti-malware sites without telling you he's doing it?

Do you really want to trust someone that has had to change their posting
identity after being busted by MS as a fake MVP?

Stalking, even in usenet is a crime, there are enough pages from your
filthy site to prove you're stalking me in your posts PCBUTTS.
