Windows programs loading slowly?

i was wondering why my Personalization programs list loads very slowly
lately. I just ran the defragmenter, and did some virus scanning a few days
ago, and when i go to change my theme, or open up programs through the START
button, it takes a long time for them to respond. sometimes, i have to
restart the explorer and try a couple of times.

i have plenty of HDD space left, and while only running the glassy theme and
idling, windows uses only about 1GB of sys memory.

did the antivirus take out something that slowed the explorer responsiveness
by accident?
