Windows Product Activation

I hope someone out there can assist me - I get the message:
"A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking
the license for this computer - Error Code 0x800700c1"
when I try to log in - can't get any further in the boot-
up process. I have files I don't want to wipe out, and so
don't want to re-install from recovery CDs. Any
suggestions?
