windows product activation error code 0x80040507

I'm trying to confirm that the computer I'm working on has
a problem because the owner violated the EULA by giving
his xp disk to another person. The computer boots, loads
windows xp and shows the logon. once a user is chosen, it
attmpts to access the user settings and then gives the
windows product activation error code 0x80040507. If
anyone can verify that this is indeed the problem I would
greatly appreciate it.

No this is not related to your suspicion. Try doing a Repair Install as I
suspect corrupt or damaged system files.
