Hello,

Right Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Press the settings button.

In System failure section, turn off (un-check) Automatically restart.

Write an event to system log should be Checked (selected).

More on program crashes:
See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

Run "MSCONFIG". See the Services Tab. Have you disabled (un-selected) some Windows services?

Hi Maurice ,
I did what you said and when I got to the Event viewer I clicked on
Application and then double clicked on the errors. This led to a Microsoft
link which said...

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 1001
Source: Application Error
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: DW_BUCKET_LOG
Message: Fault bucket %1.

Explanation
A fault bucket identification number is a number assigned by the system to
identify specific types of errors. This number is used by Microsoft to
identify a particular program error when you send an error report.

I also clicked on the errors in the System tab and the Microsoft link
said...

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 10003
Source: DCOM
Version: 5.0
Component: System Event Log
Symbolic Name: EVENT_RPCSS_DEFAULT_LAUNCH_ACCESS_DENIED
Message: Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using
DefaultLaunchPermssion. The server is:
%1
The user is %2/%3, SID=%4.

Explanation
The server process was started, but the server is not responding. A critical
..dll or data file might be missing.

User Action
Shut down the server from Task Manager, and then try again. Check that the
application was installed properly and that the .dll files are present.

Any ideas what I should do next? Thank you for your reply, much appreciated

Hi Will,
I'm not exactly sure, I will check the next time it happens, something about
there being an error and Windows will have to shut down, when I click OK some
of the icons on the right side of my taskbar disappear and sometimed the
wallpaper too.
Thank you for your reply

John.
