Windows Pro. 2000 not opening

I have Windows Pro. 2000 not opening. It is connected to a network
with
3 other computers using Win. 98 which worked o.k. before.

When I open computer the hour glass appears opening just blue
background at the back.
without the desktop icons. But when I press ctrl-alt-del and shut down
completely. It shows svhosts.exe has errors.
Then re-open it the second time it would work. The desktop icons would
appear
and all work o.k.

I have to do it every second time before it works.

The startup has these starting up.

Program File Name HKEY_LM\RunServices

WindowsNtKernelLoader svhosts.exe HKEY_CU\Run
WindowsNtKernelLoader svhosts.exe HKEY_LM\Run
WindowsNtKernelLoader svhosts.exe HKEY_LM\RunOnce
WindowsNtKernelLoader svhosts.exe HKEY_LM\RunOnceEX

Is something wrong here?

What could I do to solve this problem?

I am connected with dsl to the internet.

Thanks.

Look in Event Viewer for any clues such as a problem with a service
or a device, and Device Manager for any conflicts. I would run Disk Check
also. See if it happens when you boot into Safe Mode and if not it probably
is a driver issue. Anytime there is unusual activity you need to run a
virus scan - svhosts is not a normal W2K file - svchost is. I have not tried
it, but some say that the Msconfig executable from W98 works in W2K [if you
get error message starting it, ignore it] by placing it in the
Winnt/system32 folder- I know the one from XP works. That would allow you to
use a selective startup option where you could disable all or some of the
startup modules to troubleshoot.

A quick search at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ for svhosts
shows that you probably have a trojan!! --- Steve
