Windows Picture viewer not working

I am having trouble viewing images sent to me via e-mail.
I am running windows XP and the default program to open
jpg's is windows picture viewer, whenever i choose to
open the file it waits for a few seconds and tells me
preview is unavailable.

If i choose to save the picture first then it will open
from the saved file fine. I tried changing the default
program to windows explorer and the smiilar problem
occurs as does it when i changed it to windows media
player and got error 80070057.

It used to work fine and i have't got a clue what is
rong. Anyone got any ideas?
