windows.old

I recently let windows install it's updates and when I returned to my laptop
I had noticed it failed to work correctly. My desktop had been replaced with
a black screen and just a recycle bin.

I straight away did a system restore to get back to where my computer was
only an hour or so earlier and it failed to revert. I tried 4 or 5 other
available times to revert back too but each one failed.

After a bit of head scratching I decided to reinstall vista to see if I
could save the old files into windows.old and then pull them back into the
new vista. Now when I installed the new vista, like I hoped, vista had saved
my old version of windows into the file windows.old. Unfortunately I'm a
little bit out of my depth though now with the merging and deleting of files
so I'm just looking to get back to my original version of windows.old and try
to fix my original problem.

Does anyone know how to get back to windows.old and delete the new version
of vista?

Thanks Damian ....

Sounds like it may work but it did come with a 'caution, you may lose all
your files if this doesn't work' tag.

For whatever reason the cd/dvd combo drive on my Vostro 1700 is playing up
and it won't read blank dvd's - so I can't copy anything! Work files can be
put on my flash drive but most importantly, I-tunes weighing in at an
impressive 4.5GB is unfortunately in the balance! Is there a fail-safe way to
changing back?

Unfortunately, I do only have the one drive. I think my only option is using
a flash drive with a big capacity to save the files. Then format my laptop
and start again!
