windows not remembering settings at startup

I recently had to re-install win xp using recovery
console.I had to do this because I could only get to the
welcome screen on the computer. I had gotten a dialog box
saying a registry entry point was missing. After re-
install my computer started with the original xp wallpaper
(grassy hill and blue skies). I made several changes to
this such as, new picture ,screensaver and went to classic
windows style settings. I rebooted computer and when it
comes back on I get the original picture without any of my
changes. I tried to do this a few times,but I get the same
results.Can anyone help? Please.
