Open the Services applet in Administrative Tools, double click Messenger and
set it to Disabled. Apply and close.

If you haven't got Administrative Tools on your Start Menu right-click the
Taskbar, select Customise Start Menu (it's in there somewhere). In the
scroll window go down to the Administrative Tools entry and select to either
show on 1All Programs' or 'Start Menu and All Programs'.

MSN Messenger is garbage......... (just my opinion)

However, FREE SURFER is an excellent pop-up stopper, and
it's FREE. Download EMS Free Surfer. It works great !!!

Get it here:

Why not just dump IE and use one of the alternative browsers that have
pop-up blocking included without you having to spend money on "special"
software to do it for you!
I use Mozilla Firebird quite happily myself.

But just in case anyone's confused here the Messenger pop-ups in XP are a
system service, nothing to do with MSN Messenger.
