after downloading about I get a message stating "this does not have a valid
digital
signature that verifies its publisher.
What do I do to corect this or should I just go ahead a use the player. I
downloaded
from my computer from Microsoft downloads.

After downloading what? The WMP9 or a music file? You should be using
Version WMP10 by now. Where did you download it from, does it have a
license with the copy? Repost with more info.
