Windows Movie Maker 2.1 hard to come by

I've read the posts above. Amazingly, it seems that the only way to get 2.1
is to re-download SP2 and I don't really want to do that (my OS is working
just fine and I don't want to risk breaking it). My question is this: is
there any reason why I should not simply copy the Movie Maker folder from a
PC which has Version 2.1 and paste it into the Program Files folder on this
computer after deleting Version 2.0 of WMM? Or is that just too simple or
ineffective or dangerous or illegal? Look forward to hearing from someone who
knows the answer.

I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean - is this not a wise thing to do
or will it just not work or what? I'm afraid I have only limited knowledge
and I need to have this spelt out. Thanks for your interest so far

Maybe the following info will offer some ideas:

The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK

The following article contains info on registering
the Movie Maker .dll files.

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

If you want to reinstall SP2 you can download
it from the following site:

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

Good luck.

wise or not depends on your computer skills.... if you don't know what I
mean by re-registering the DLLs then you should get some local help and not
do it by yourself.

Thanks for the caution. Helpful link from John Inzer
(http://tinyurl.com/65pfo) detailing steps to register WMM exe and dlls. This
seems to have worked fine but there is a but - now I have 2 PCs each running
identical WMM v2.1 but only one of them will capture a 1GB .mpg file. Why
might that be? The codecs are all installed and working. Going gently nuts
here!

I would suspect a resource issue....try a
smaller file.

And .mpgs are problematic sometimes.

Mpeg isn't a truly compatible file and depending on what sort of mpeg it is
the more or less problems you will have.
Even if you bought two pc's from the same vendor with the same spec, you
have no doubt added different programmes or even installed them in a
different order, maybe added a codec or two etc, all of these things affect
the way in which MM can handle files.
The most trouble free way is to convert the mpgs to wmv and import those.
