Sometimes, when I start Outlook XP, the Windows Messenger program pops up.
I have it turned off in the Control Panel and in outlook options, so why
does it start-up? Thanks.

The same thing happens to me when I come into Outlook Express for these
newsgroups. If I try to force-close it, I get the message "There are other
applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You
must close these other applications first, these apps may include Outlook,
Outlook Express, and IE." Whats strange is, it doesn't appear when I use
Outlook 2003. I have to wonder what "feature" of Windows Messenger is being
used by OE- and how I can turn that feature off.

So I'd love to hear an answer, too!

In Outlook, click Tools>Options>Other and uncheck the IM boxes at the
bottom.

For OE, I looked in OE's Help:

"To stop your messenger service program from starting automatically
Your messenger service program starts running whenever you turn on your
computer. When you connect to the Internet, the program automatically
connects to the appropriate servers and starts providing you with instant
messaging service.

1.. In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click your messenger service,
and then click Options.
2.. On the Preferences tab, clear the Run this program when Windows starts
check box. "

Brian, thanks for the help! Strange tho, I don't have that checkbox ("Run
this program when Windows starts"). I did have one Windows Messenger
checkbox marked in my Outlook 2003, though (Tools/Options/Other), I pulled
it out.

Thanks,
