Jonathan,

I.m not James, but am having trouble starting my own question. I hope he
doesn't mind my stepping on his. I gave my dad a computer and have been
helping him learn. I'm used to using NetMeeting at work and decided to try to
use the Remote Assist to help my dad. I signed up for Messenger (v 4.7) and
walked him through as well. When we try to Start remote Assist, a message
comes back that the "remote host cannot be resolved". I called a friend from
work who uses this regulary and got the dame thing. I also tunrned my
firewall off. Any suggestions?

Greetings James,

Can you explain what exactly is happening when you try, including the exact error messages
that you are receiving?

Sorry for the vague posting, am a novice/newbie so bear with me. I have WINDOWS MESSENGER and would like to use REMOTE ASSISTANCE. Have got the boxed checked in the settings, UPnP Port 5000 and Remote Assistane/Terminal Server RDP Port 3389 checked in my System Services of McAfee Firewall Plus.

However, when i highlight my friends contact number to (a) call and talk via
PC to PC or (b) ask for remote assistance - it shows "waiting for
connection/response from my friends computer, then it shows, canoot connect
to the computer because my friends computer is not set to receive remote
assistance/voice calls.

Forgive me, but i'm sure that this must be very frustrating for you to try
to educate a novice/newbie. Please do try to explain a solution in
simple(idiot prooof) english.

Thanks
James Roa

I assume that you are absolutely positive that his computer(and your
computer) is set to receive Remote Assistance.

My experience(as a Remote Assistance help provider)is that the
connection rarely happens at the first try and if it fails I tell the
requester to try again by phone or IM chat. Connection normally happens
at 2nd or 3rd try but it still fails, then quit for trial at later time.

So i'm to make sure that both the computers have to have the REMOTE
ASSISTANCE box checked? You also mentioned that connection normally happens
2nd or 3rd try? If fails, try again? Am glad you are an experienced REMOTE
ASSISTANCE HELP PROVIDER, which relates that you know what i as a
newbie/novice am doing wrong! Any other suggestions/solutions that you could
recommend. please.
Thanks
James

One two more thing to add:

If the PCs of your's and/or your friend's are/is behind router(s) then
check if they support UPnP. If they are purchased within three years,
they are probably OK.

If firewall(other than WXP build in firewall) is installed(in your
or/and your friend's PC) then it has to be shut down or it is set for
Remote Asshistance to pass through the firewall.

Hi James,
Thanks for the help. I'm a little new to posting at the discussion boards. I
selected new => ?. This took me to a Windows Live sign in. I used my .Net
Passport sign in. This took me right back where I started. I could not figure
out how to create a thread from there.

Hi Mike R,

Yup had the same experience as you being a newbie/novice. Get to this forum
page again, click on the tab "new" and highlight "question"? - that should do
the trick, as it did fer me. Hope it workks fer you mate. If it fails, stay

hi "churin"

thanks fer the advise again, no - both of our computers are not being
routers and have UPnP boxed checked on my McAfee Security Settings, as well
as Remote Assistance/Terminal Server(RDP) Port 3389. Have not got in contact
with me friend yet, will try as you advised and revert on the results. Maybe,
i should get you to remotely access my computer, as/since you are a remote
assistance help provider. sure would appreciate the assistance. Have got
registry problems, missing uninstall in add/remove. Do you charge fer yer
services?

churin

No, I do not charge for participating in your experimenting Remote
Assistance. I use the Remote Assistance from time to time to help my
relatives and friends.

If you would like me to be the partner for trying the Remote Assistance,
send an email to the following address indicating your time zone and
phone number, and what time you want me to call you. My time zone is
U.S. Eastern.

(e-mail address removed)

After you send out the above email, be sure to post back here to that
effect.
