Windows Messenger - no Voice or Sharing

All of a sudden voice or application sharing will not work in messenger but
if we use Netmeeting then all works just fine.

As far as I know Messenger just uses Netmeeting anyway for voice and sharing
so I do not understand why Netmeeting voice/sharing works but through
messenger they do not.

Greetings,

Actually they have very little to do with one another.

Messenger's voice functionality is completely separate from Netmeeting's it uses the
Real-Time Communication (RTC) APIs within XP and makes use of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)
functionality in order to discover, set up and establish a direct connection through NATs and
[some] firewalls. The application sharing feature in Messenger also uses UPnP functionality
and then forwards the necessary info to the Netmeeting component.

Netmeeting on the other hand uses its own voice functionality and H.323 protocol. As well,
application sharing is done through T.120. There is no UPnP functionality within Netmeeting
either.

As such, they're actually completely different entities and if you're experiencing issues,
they're probably related to UPnP within one part of your connection (either your side or your
contacts).

I did a clean install from a Ghost backup and had the same problem so the
problem is on their end.

Thanks

Hi,

Well to be honest, in the event that say your routers' UPnP table has become full then what's
happening on the PC itself won't matter.

Not saying it's his fault just pointing this out.
