Okay, I can disable windows messenger, figured out how to turn it off and not to try to log on. But the stupid icon comes back even when I load IE or Outlook Express. It may have a X thru it to show it's disabled but I hate the icon being in my system tray. And fI can't get rid of it while I have those applications open. HELP?

Hi,

Before you get too excited about disabling messenger, you might be
better off fixing the problem that lets messages get through in the
first place.

Messenger in telling you that there are ports open, essentially you're
open to attack. Get a firewall up and running, then worry about
disabling messanger.

It comes on cause it isn't turned off in Outlook Express. Every time you
open Outlook Express it opens Windows Messenger.

Open Outlook Express and go up to Tools and then to Options.
Under the General Tab
Take out the check for "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger."

There is the "Messenger" NT service. There is the "Windows Messenger"
prattle client included in Windows XP. And there is the "MSN Messenger"
prattle client. All 3 are different, so just saying "Messenger" doesn't
provide a clue as to which one that you are asking about.

The Messenger NT service does not present a tray icon in the system
notification area. So your description probably rules out this source. If
you mislead with your description, just stop this NT service (run
services.msc) and configure it to Manual or Disable. However, if this is
the source of the problem then the real problem is that you are not using a
properly configured firewall.

I think the WIndows Messenger includes a tray icon. I know the MSN
Messenger client does show a tray icon. If it is MSN Messenger then
uninstall the damn thing. If it is the Windows Messenger, there are
probably better articles about disabling and removing it, but my
recollection is:

- In OE and Outlook, disable the Messenger integration.
- If its icon is in the tray, right-click and exit or close it.
- In Add/Remove Windows Components, remove Windows Messenger. All this does
is remove its icon from the Start menu (and the client still remains).
- In the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), disable Windows Messenger from
loading at startup. Go under the tree node "Local Computer Policy ->
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Messenger".
You want to *enable* both of the "Do not ..." options.
- Reboot.

First off, didn't anybody read my entire message. I CAN DISABLE WINDOWS MESSENGER! I have Windows XP Home version, I disabled it thru Outlook Express and thru services. It is disabled, I just hate the stupid icon because it comes back when you use IE and Outlook. Anybody ELSE have a clue?

Goto http://www.dougknox.com/ and search messenger

Open messenger, and in "Tools", "Options", Preferences tab, uncheck "Run
this program when windows starts", and reboot...BINGO...icon gone from task
bar...

Also, if you "Disabled" Messenger in "Services", you will notice if you read
the description, it tells you that THIS "Messenger" has NOTHING to do with
"Windows Messenger"...Hope all this helps...Willie
