I have been testing with WMP for sharing media with my smart TV. (Philips
32PFL3517H)
At last I seem to get results, but I do have some questions.
- I can set custom folders for sharing, but I also want to share the DVD
drive (E:). I can't get this done.
- When playing some 4/3 divx files, they appear with stretched aspect ratio
on TV. (they play OK from DVD player)

Can this be solved?

You should be able to share drive E by right clicking it under Explorer
and pick sharing. Doesn't that work?

Stretched video I believe is always a codec problem. And I don't know
what you mean by on TV. You mean you are sending your computer desktop
to a TV? Or you are using a TV application on your computer, or what?

Another thing, what version of WMP are you using?

That's how I can make a shared folder (for other computers in the network).
This doesn't make them available for the TV.

I'm trying to share media (video files, music, pictures) using Windows media
player as a server for the smart TV.
I suppose the stretched pictures of (some) divx files has to be solved by TV
firmware updates. Other files are enlarged 4/3 correctly. And other divx
files aren't played at all... Chaotic codec implementation. And I'm talking
about files which play perfectly on PC and on the stand alone DVD player.

I'm using WMP version 11 on Windows XP and Windows Vista computers.

Now in WMP11, when I go to "options - media library - search in folder" I
can add folders which become available for the TV. I assumed it to be
logical to do the same with removable media (DVD), but then the add button
remains greyed out...

I don't know what format those files are. But I have learned you can't
share MPG files that are in use. Although WMV files you can. And my
software I can select which format to create the files. And I can share
WMV files to as many computers I want too. Even if the TV is still
recording the file.

I have been using a number of USB TV Tuners since 2001 I guess. But I
don't know what a smart TV is? And some applications use their own
codecs and some use the common codecs. Common codecs can be easily
updated. Applications that use their own I think you are stuck with the
developer for updates.

I only use WMP for playing files, so I don't know how sharing or
anything else works there. I did have WMP v11 installed briefly on one
XP machine. I didn't care for it and dumped it. Some of my XP machines
have v9 and some have v10 (I like v9 the best). But v12 on Windows 7
does something I really like. Maybe you can check v11 for me. That is if
I play a file and pause it. Then go to standby or hibernate, I can
unpause and pick up just where I left off. Under v9 and v10, it starts
at the beginning of the file again.

There were no files in use, at least not by me. (I don't know what Windows
does under the surface of course).
The video files can be .avi MPG, MP4, WMV and some other I think. But then
you enter the nightmare of video codecs. One avi file is not the same as
another avi, etc.

Today I have also been fighting a battle with codecs. Problem: WMV started
disappearing just by itself when I touched it. A long search on internet
learned that this issue probably due to missing or corrupt codecs. I must
admit: I have been removing Twonky and FormatFactory, both applications also
using codecs. And removing applications alsmost always leaves a shambles.
Now it looks I managed to resolve the misbehaving of WMP using K-lite for
detecting and repairing codecs.

BTW, I had a look in some WMP news groups to remain on topic, but these
groups are all desolate.

The Philips 32PFL3517H is a flat screen (LED) TV which I recently bought. I
use it mainly with my HD satellite receiver, but it also has options to
connect to my (wireless) network. It has a Youtube app, and a network app,
which can play the earlier mentioned media files streamed by WMP on my
computers. Not all Windows players are compatible with my TV, but the
following list is said to be compatible:

-Windows Media Player (for Microsoft Windows)
-Twonky Media (for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X)
-Sony Vaio Media Server (for Microsoft Windows)
-TVersity (for Microsoft Windows)
-Nero MediaHome
-DiXiM (for Microsoft Windows XP)
-Macrovision Network Media Server (for Microsoft Windows)
-Fuppes (for Linux)
-uShare (for Linux

I have only tried Twonky (for which I got a reg. serial). One advantage of
Twonky is that it also plays files from removable media, which WMP seems to
refuse, but it is a litlle unstable and slow program.
Then I tried WMP with the advantage I can leave off other programs from my
PC for streaming to TV.

The player I like best is VLC, this plays absolutely everything very well
and uses its own codecs. But I believe I can not use it to stream video
files to my TV...

I'll give it a try when I have time, but I had stopped using the energy
management 'sleep, hymernate' or whatever in Windows XP. I have tested these
long time ago, but stopped trying disillusioned because it didn't work
properly. I could make PC sleep pressing the sleep button on the keyboard,
but 5 out of 10 times the PC couldn't be made to wake up anymore.
