How come with any system I use, Windows Media Player 9
quits responding for a few seconds when you first open it
and you are playing a song? It only does it for a few
seconds, and then it is fine. It always does this.

Are you saying that if you go to a friends house and start WMP 9 it will do
this? How about if you go to your local Office Depot and start WMP 9 on one
of the floor models? Does it do the same thing? I don't have any problems
with my Windows Media Player 9 at all. It works great. I select a song on
my hard drive and it plays it. I play movies, video clips, music cd's, it
plays everything with no problems at all.

Mine does this as well.
I have my Media Player set to access several different files that hold
various types of mp3's that I ripped. You configure Media Player to look at
these files for updates or additions and I think that the pause when you
open it is just Media Player checking these folders to see if any new mp3's
have been added.
I don't know what the default configuration is for Media Player but I am
pretty sure that your Media Player is just doing the same thing, checking
folders to see if any new mp3's have been added.
I also have a large number of play lists that I have compiled and I would
think that Media Player would check those as well to see if any changes have
been made.
