windows media player does not open

All of a sudden when i try and open windows media player it wont open, all I get is a sound and then nothing, i have run a virus scan and checked the drivers, the 'serial' device is not working properly but the driver seems to be fine. I cannot see what else can be wrong and would really appreciate some help from somebody who knows what they are doing!!!!!
