My biggest complaint with WMP11 on Vista throughout beta has been its poor
performance...

mpfmp.exe - what's the point of it and why was it necessary?

It is not ready for prime time either or at least wasn't in RC2.

Look how much resources it was eating, and it grew by 10MB every time
another song would start.

Travis,

Rick's correct, it's for DRM junk.
Stands for Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE
so it's a "supposedly" protected pipe to the DRM servers.
