At least once a day I get a message that reads "Windows mail has encountered
a problem and needs to shut down".

Ths is usually after I have typed a long message, and amd checking it before
sending. It does not save the email - it is gone once and for all.

This is driving me crazy. Is there a solution?

What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them cause assorted
problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

It's not dangerous to run without an AV unless you do something foolish,
like opening a suspicious attachment.
How did you "turn it off"? Some AV programs, like Norton, McAfee, and
Trend Micro, do not cease their bad effects unless you completely
uninstall the program. Try that, and if it results in improvement, we can
recommend a free replacement AV that is more compatible.
