I forward spreadsheets home to work on but since using windows mail I cannot
open them. I then forward them to my partner who is using XP and I can then
open them without any problem. Have unticked all security etc. Where else do
I go.

If you mean you can't open them directly from Windows Mail, then that's
probably a good thing.
If you open them, and edit them, you may forget to do a "save as", and lose
your changes to the temporary file.
You should save the attached file first, then open it outside of WM.

By any chance, is your Office computer using the Outlook email program?
By default, Outlook encodes HTML attachments in a proprietary format
that cannot be decoded by a non-Outlook email client. The workaround
is to send attachments from Outlook using plain text format only.
