Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Which antivirus? Some of them still interfere with Windows Mail
even with the email scanner turned off.

I am using Norton 360v2, and all was working well until I changed my hard
drive for a larger drive on my Dell 9150.
My Laptop is also running Windows Mail with Norton and all is working well,
so it is a real mystery why the dell is having this problem

Norton antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Symptoms often don't start until months later, and it seems to be related
to how many suspicious emails are quarantined by the antivirus.

The only way you can prove or disprove that Norton is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of aggressive antivirus products:

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

Many thanks Gary, I have installed Windows Live Mail and all is working well
now even though I have kept Norton 360 running.
Thanks again

Good to hear. Thanks for your feedback.
Don't forget to keep email scanning disabled in Norton 360.
