My laptop died! I, however, can still read data from the hard drive.

On my new Vista laptop, how do I copy/import the old Outlook files into
Windows Mail on Vista? Each time I try to import, Windows Mail tells me that
it won't allow me to do it... "messages cannot be imported from the MAPI
client." after selecting Microsoft Outllook.

It says that because you don't have Outlook installed on your Vista machine.
Outlook is the missing "MAPI Client" from the error message and must be
present to access Outlook Data (.PST) files; Windows Mail cannot access one
of these by itself. Probably the simplest thing for you to do is to
download and install the Outlook 2007 Trial edition, use it to connect to
and access your existing .PST files for the transfer to Windows Mail, then
uninstall the trial edition after all the data is moved. The only other way
of going about this is to take your existing .PST files to a machine that
has both Outlook and Outlook Express on it, connect the .PST files to
Outlook, move everything to Outlook Express, then take the Outlook Express
..DBX files to the Vista machine; Windows Mail can access these directly.

Outlook has to be installed and configured on the same PC, with the outlook
data file you wish to access
