Windows Mail clearing read newsgroups

I have had Vista for about a week. Still learning Win. Mail vs the old
Outlook Express in XP.
I have set up mail & Newsgroup accts. That seems ok. My quest. is why in
Newsgroups
do I have to click *catch up* in order for the counter to clear?
In OE they cleared when I went from newsgroup to newsgroup.

Is this just the way WinMail works or did I miss a setting somewhere?
TIA

If you want WinMail to mark all the newsgroup messages as read when
you leave a newsgroup (many of us don't), click on Tools, then Options,
then Read. If there is no check mark in the box before Mark all messages
as read when exiting a newsgroup, click on this box, then Apply. Click
on OK.

Thanks I knew it had to be a setting I missed.

That's probably because it's only downloading 300 headers. If you want to
download all headers (except the ones you've marked read by clicking
catchup) then uncheck that option in Tools | Options | Read.
