Windows Mail attachments

I have started having problems opening attachments, e.g. Word, Jpeg, avi.
When I click the attachment nothing happens, but both cores go up to about
75%. The Mail program is flagged as "not responding" and the only action I
can take is to restart. I get the normal "checking for a solution" dialogue,
but none has been found as yet! I have also tried saving the attachment
rather than opening and get exactly the same symptoms.

Uninstall non-compatible antivirus programs, particularly
McAfee and Norton.

Thanks Steve, Gary and Morrell. I have tried your suggestion Steve (I'm
using AVG as my email scanner), but to no avail. I can't be without the
ability to open attachments, so consequently I have downloaded Thunderbird,
which is working fine. Inconvenient, though, as it doesn't support importing
my folders from Mail!

You can import Windows Mail .eml files, per this help page...

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Importing_and_exporting_your_mail
"Windows mail (Vista)
* Import to Thunderbird: Windows mail stores the messages as .EML files.
You can use the ImportExportTools extension to import .EML files. It lets
you select multiple .EML files at the same time."

download the Import/Export add-on tool here....
http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html
save the .xpi file to disk,
open Tbird
Tools - add-ons - Install
find the .xpi file and install
restart Tbird
Tools - Import/Export files in mbox/eml format - Import all eml files in a
directory
navigate to c:\users\youraccount\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\LocalFolders\pick a folder

It brings them all into whichever Tbird folder you have selected. SO,
create your Tbird folder, and run the import..
