Vista Mail freezes when opening attachments -jpegs and pdfs

I have had a problem with Mail since day one: attachments, such as jpeg and
pdf, as well as doc freeze Mail when I try to open them or save them. I have
to click on X to shut down Mail, through the ensuing pop-up with options to
reopen, etc.

Yet, when Mail opens up and I try to save the attachment again, Mail says
that there is already a copy of the file saved and whether I want to
overwrite, and whammo...it freezes again.

I have uninstalled the antivirus and firewall services and still no changes.

There are no other problems with the PC, only Mail.

Which antivirus did you uninstall? Some of them require a special
debris remover tool. Do not disable the Windows Firewall.
