Windows Mail Address Autofill

B

Bruce...

Hi All,

In Outlook Express, I used to add a registry D-String value to the WAB4
folder called "UseOutlook" with a "1" value. This allowed OE to pull my
contacts from Outlook and keep the OE and Outlook address books identical.

Upgraded to Vista/Windows Mail and even though it pulled my address book
from OE, I can't figure out how to link to Outlook as before. Also, even
though I've checked the box to automatically fill e-mail name/address when
composing an e- mail, it's only auto filling names I've sent e-mails to from
Windows Mail, not from the Contacts book.

Thanks very much for any help/suggestions!

Windows Mail doesn't use the contacts list for completing addresses.
Instead, it uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent
messages to. This list is very hard to edit - it's easier just to send
messages to the 29 addresses you want on the list, and then send
a message to any address which drops off the list.

If you'd rather use the contacts list, don't type any part of the
address. Instead, in the new message window, click on Tools,
then Select Recipients.

I don't how to make it use an Outlook contacts list, if there is
any way to do it.

Thanks for your response. Are you saying that WM will only complete e-mail
address for the last 29 address previously sent? Then why is there a setting
(just like in OE) under the 'send' tab in 'options' to "Automatically
complete e-mail address when composing"? I have many addresses used often. I
need the autofill requirement i.e. typing the 1st 2-3 letters of someone's
name and WM fills in the balance. That doesn't work even though I have the
box checked per above.

Thanks again for any continued dialog on this. I'm baffled and frustrated.

It doesn't always work well, even as I described it. If you want an email
program that handles address completion better, try Windows Live Mail.
Note that when you install WLM, it hides, but does not remove Windows
Mail.

Yes, thanks for that. My only concern, if I understand Windows Live
correctly is that my e-mails will then go through Microsoft's server like the
way a Yahoo mail account is held. Is that correct?

I'm thinking of either trying Mozilla T'bird or sticking with XP and OE. The
other option is converting to Outlook but if I understand that correctly,
everything is held in 1 huge .pst file which includes calendar, contacts
etc...

The way WLM stores the data depends on what type of account you
tell it to use. If you tell it to use one of the Microsoft accounts, it
will
indeed store the data for that account on Microsoft's server. If you tell
it to use an account with the IMAP protocol, it may store the data for
that account on that account's server. If you stick with accounts using
the common POP protocol, it will, by default, delete the messages from
the server as soon as you download them.

If you need more details on this, try asking in newsgroup:

Thanks very much Robert. Very nice of you to help me and so many others
here. I'll check out the WLM group from here and come up with a solution.
I've been playing around with T'bird for an hour or so and it's fairly close
the OE and does the autofill from the contacts book perfectly.
