Hi,

I have two machines on the network that give this error
when a user attempts to login:

windows cannot create the profile
\\servername\profiles$\user.pds

This error only occurs on 2 machines and the users can
login fine elsewhere. Also when a user who has not worked
on the machine before tries to login it says that the
domain does not exist and sends them back to the login
screen.

The machines are running win 2000 and the server runs
server 2003.

I have no clue what the problem is except that it must be
machine specific as thy can login on other machines.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Are the machine on a manually assigned IP address, or are you using
DHCP? I have had this to me on a couple of occasions when the machine
was using DHCP. I assume it sometimes takes a little longer to negotiate
with the DHCP server and so things aren't fully ready when you try to
log in. Since I assigned the machine an IP address manually it has been
fine.

Hi,

thanks for the reply.... how do i assign it manually and
also how do i make sure it doesn't conflict with the
other existing ips.

thanks

If the problem login user using "roaming profile" to login the domain server
that is greater than w2k sp4 or w2003 ( your case ) the problem will occur.
because .pds is the old profile folder file before you upgrade to 2003, and
2003 use the .usr folder instead of .pds

you can try this:
1. login the problem machine with a new create user account or local profile
user account.
The result should be success to login without problem.
2. change the problem user account from roaming profile to local profile
or transfer the problem user account to a new account. ( copy)
