Dewey - being a Messenger user who does not want to upgrade (it's too
bloody animated as it is Ver 7.5 0324) will I eventually be forced to do
it? If so, will other IM clients pick up my Messenger (or updated
Messenger) clients?

msn has always enforced upgrades... meaning that you will no longer be able
to login if you dont update.
its stupid and I hate it.. but its how it has been... however...

because windows 2000 will not be able to run msn live I think that they will
co-exist for some time...

do you have windows xp?

Xp Home on main box and 98SE on two others. Hoping to use one old 98 box
as a server to link all three to share a dialup connection. Any hardware
genius that can take this on gets a free weekend on Manitoulin (tweaking
this non-geek's boxes) with cold running beer. Take note: Little Beer
wouldn't like you fooling with Mrs Beer if you take me up on this. I'm
already in Little Beer's bad books because of

Might I suggest Trillian - free..

It (Trillian) will give you the nod when any of the other IMs update their
software, and very shortly atterwards will post a patch.

Gaim is just as good at http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
Although it is for *nix - it works very well with many combinations
Cheers
