I dont' have scrollbars in the reading pane, is that default behaviour?

If you have a large message you would have a scroll bar to the right as well
at the bottom

um..ya i know that. i have several large messages and see no scrollbars
anywhere.

It is the /current/ behaviour (read: bug). ;-)
