Windows key doesn't work and desktop appears as explorer window.

This happened "around" an update. Windows key doesn't work
and at the same time windows explorer won't open to view
files. The desktop has taken on the looks of an explorer
window of the desktop. Anyone have any idea how to cure
this? thx
