Windows Installer

I just put a copy of Windows XP SP2 on my PC, I ran all the update except the
two .net one because they fail to install. I have tried to install Norton
System works 2006 which will not install, I have tried to install the latest
Java and that says windows installer service fails to start. I have
downloaded the latest windows installer and used the one that Norton's disk
say to use and none of the programs still will install. Any suggestions on
what may cause this problem and any cure?

If it's a brand new install...do yourself a favor and start over. When
you update, don't install more than 5 updates at a time and reboot
after the 5th.
