Have Windows XP and Office 2000 loaded on my pc. While trying to scan a doc
using my HP6110 printer, I encountered a problem and the pc froze. I had
Outlook open at the time. Now, Outlook is not functioning as before. Tried
a system restore using 3 dates with no change. An error saying "This
application requires Windows Installer to open" comes up. Also am getting an
error saying there is not enough virtual memory. Can I simply reinstall XP
or must I reinstall the Office suite, as well?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the period beginning with the last boot and post
copies. Please do not copy any Information Reports.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hi R,
Your version of Windows installer could have been corrupted.
If you want to check the version of the Windows Installer on your system
(XP), check the version of MSI.DLL in the Windows\System 32 folder. If the
version is 3.1.4000.2435, you have the latest version. If you don't have the
latest version you may have to reinstall Windows Installer.

Thanks for responding. Listed below are the errors I found on the Events
Viewer with the associated details. The Events Viewer only shows data from
1/31/6 and my problem started on Monday, 1/30/6. So I assume that the
different system restores wiped out the errors from that day. I did go into
Microsoft's website and downloaded the Installer Redistributable file. I
loaded it on my pc with no change. After a little searching, I realized that
I had already gotten the update prior to this.
With all that, I need to know if I must reload Office to clear this problem.
Word, Excel and Powerpoint are all working ok. My machine is running very
slow and I guess that is from the Virtual Memory problem. As I don't have
the disks for Office 2000 (this pc came with it loaded) I wonder if I will
have to buy the latest version and load it. If I do this, will I lose any of
the files I've created using the suite?

The version I have of Installer is the same as what you show. I also have
the update Installer Redistributable. Nothing I've done seems to have solved
the problem.

I think you would do better to post to either or both these two newsgroups:

microsoft.public.office.misc

microsoft.public.office.setup

What are these sites and what can they do to help?
Should I post the same message and details currently on this site?
FYI: I uninstalled SPAMfighter and all related files as well as ALL HP
printer files this morning, thinking that they may be adding to my problem.
I then rebooted and was able to get Outlook to open (after several attempts
with the same error about Installer appearing). I still have a virtual
memory problem and the pc is very slow, I know there is a problem with
something that is draining it, but am not sure how to proceed to find it.
Using the Outlook Help Repair option only says that it cannot perform the
function and then closes the application.
Thanks for trying to help.

Sorry R,
That was my only shot sorry it didn't work. I think Gerry's suggestion to
talk to one of the MS Office NGs may be your best bet :(
