Windows Installer

When I start MS-Word (in Windows XP) a screen appears
briefly saying "Windows Installer, Preparing to install".
It then takes about 1-1 1/2 min. to start up Word, and it
runs fairly slowly. What is this "preparing to install"
message? Any advice?
