Windows Installer

Earlier today, I was attempting to help my niece solve a problem with
installation of her HP 5150 printer.

During the install from the HP driver CDrom, an error code popped up.
She got in contact with HP via online chat mode and was given some
instrux dealling with the Windows Installer.

We were told to stop the Windows Installer; but the rightclick menu
had STOP grayed out. So, I clicked on START and then did the
rightclick on the STOP then shown in the rightckcick dropdown
menu. Then we continued on with the instrux.

Can someone explain/verify: msi.dll, msihndl.dll and msiexec.exe
files? We were told to rename those three files within
\windows\system32 folder by using the RUN cmd line, after Stopping the
Windows Installer.

The procedure did not correct the stalled install sequence of the HP
drivers and we are at a loss for solving the problem (which I think
might be a corrupted HP driver CDrom disc).

I have browsed through your suggested link and also did a Google on:
Windows Installer. I think I am getting a grasp of its purpose, but I
do not grasp the concept of "services" and of "Starting/Stopping".

Any hints?

BTW, my niece is running XPhome w/SP1.

She tells me that she recently did a restore via a telephone walkthru,
and afterwards, the HP5150 did not function. My suggestion to her was
to install the HP printer driver while the USB cable is disconnected
between printer and PC. I did not find out about the HP error code
until my visit earlier today. :(
