Installing an HP Photosmart 7150 Printer

I am trying to help a friend who just purchase a new Dell computer running
Windows XP Home Edition. We are trying to install an HP Photosmart 7150
printer and Windows XP is not detecting the hardware. We have downloaded the
XP drivers (4.0-4.1) from the HP website and start the installation and when
it advises us to plug in the power and connect the USB cable to the computer
it can't find the
hardware and after a few minutes it says to retry to detect the hardware.
We were able to install a Dell printer and it is located on USB001, but can
not install the HP printer. We have also uninstalled the Dell printer and
retried to install the HP and XP will not detect the hardware. This is very
frustrating as this printer worked fine on her old computer running Windows
98!!
Should I contact HP for technical assistance or is it a USB problem? Can
anyone help me!!!

Did you also remember to turn the printer on after connecting it to the USB
port? Is it the same USB port you installed the Dell (actually a rebadged
Lexmark) printer on... (to confirm the USB port is actually working
correctly)? Did you try another USB cable?

Have uou carefully read the user manual.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bpy20887.pdf

It reads 'Be sure to insert the HP Photosmart CD before you connect the
printer to your computer. It goes on to read... Important: Do not connect
the printer to your computer until prompted.

So the inbstallation software CD will load up applications and drivers: do
not just plug in the printer and expect Windows to find it and request thge
drivers. This won't work.

Another point: some Lexmark Printers will not work on any other than the
Primary USB port, so if you've installed the software according to the user
guide, try changing the USB cable to other USB ports: make sure that you
temporarily disconnect all other USB devices.

I have downloaded 4.0-4.1 XP drivers from HP site and disabled the TSR (anti
virus) programs per instructions from HP website. Before I started the
driver installation
I disconnected the power and USB cable connected to the HP printer from the
PC and followed the installation instructions, but the installation is
getting hung up when it is looking for the hardware. The Dell printer is
still attached to the USB001 port. How can you tell which USB ports can be
used for printers or does it make a difference? Perhaps a new USB cable
would help?
Thanks SM
