Windows Installer spuriously activated by Windows Explorer

Whenever I try to copy a file from one folder to another with Windows
Explorer, whether using "drag and drop" or "copy and paste", Windows
Installer is spuriously activated. I obviously hit "Cancel", but Windows
Installer is immediately brought up again. The process repeats itself two or
three times before the requested file operation is completed. The software
that Windows Installer/Explorer is attempting to install is "Roxio Easy Media
Creator 7".

I am running Windows Server 20003 Standard, and have administrator
priviledges. Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition is installed, with the
latest virus updates. I just finished a scan of the operating system
partition, which turned up nothing. I also ran RegClean.exe and jv16 Registry
Cleaner, but neither was able to solve the problem. All the security updates
indicated on Windows Update have been installed.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated!

Hi

Most likely it is Windows Installer doing an on-demand installation,
please take a look at this post:

Hi Torgeir,

Thanks a lot for the info: I followed the guidelines in the web page
you pointed me to. Checking the Event Viewer, I discovered that the
system was complaining about a file named gdiplus.dll that had gone
missing. So I went to http://www.dll-files.com/, found the file, and
copied it to the \system32 folder (after checking that it did have
a Microsoft digital signature and was virus-free). Now things seem
to be working fine again. I'm still a bit scared since I don't
really understand what triggered the problem in the first place, but
at least my headaches are gone... for now... and again, I thank you
a lot for your help.

Cheers,

Hi

I see that the gdiplus.dll available at http://www.dll-files.com/
is v5.1.3097.0. That is not good, it has a security flaw:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028
Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) Could Allow Code Execution (833987)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-028.mspx

You should replace the file with the gdiplus.dll v5.1.3102.1360 file
that is available here:

Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+

(this download link is also found in the MS04-028 bulletin)

Oh, that's right! Good grief, I had missed that... I've just put the
right file in place. Many thanks once again!

Cheers,
