Windows installer running in background

While installing windows xp sp2 from the disc the drive quit working so I put
the disc in the other drive to finish the install. Now everything is up and
running and working fine except that during system bootup the installer
starts trying to install from a disc called status!? How do I cancel this
bogus install? I can close the thing out in Taskmaster but it continues to
run in the background robbing system resources.

BigEd08, I am having this same problem at start up as well. Have you received
any information to help you resolve this issue? Thanks.

I don't see other replies here. I can't help with the issue of the
installer running in the background--not sure what that's about, but if you
are getting regular bogus installer runs, for "productX":

Google for Windows Installer cleanup tool.

You should find a Microsoft hosted KB article which has instructions for
using the tool and a link to the download. Download the tool, run the
downloaded file to install it. Then run the tool. Look for "productX" in
the list, select that, and tell the tool to remove the installer information
for that product.

If this is a product you have a source for and use regularly, you may need
to reinstall it if repair is needed in the future.

If you are on a shared machine, I'd uninstall the tool after use--this can
be a dangerous thing to leave lying around.

Bill, I appreciate your help. I located the CD for my HP Officejet All-in One
and inserted it and quickly the "Status dialogue box" stopped running in the
background and everything works fine. It appears that something happened
with the printer that caused the system to continuously give a dialogue box
indicating that something was trying to be installed. Running the printer CD
corrected the issue. Thanks again.

Excellent--that's the best solution, if what is being prompted for is
something you can find the media for and are still using.

This seems to be an issue with the Windows installer--probably not your
printer, per se--so it may recur. When it does recur, it seems to involve
the same application, so keep track of that CD.
