Windows Installer Patch Problem Preventing Uninstall

E

Ed

A recent hard drive crash (or unknown virus) caused most
files greater than 2MB on my XP Pro PC to be truncated to
0 bytes. I have restored most from back-ups, but I do
not not have backups to the Windows Installer MSP and MSI
files that were truncated. As a result, when I attempt
to reinstall or uninstall Office XP, I get an error that
the Pathc PAckage cannot be opened. I read the MSI log
files and it looks like it's bombing on one of the 0-byte
MSP files. Moving the offending files out of the
Windows\Installer folder and running the KB recommended
Installer Cleanup Utility have both failed. I can't
uninstall and reinstall Office XP as a result. I'm
posting this problem in the XP setup newsgroup as it
appears to be WIndwos Installer realted more than Office
related. --Ed

Eric,

Tks. I tried both methods in the KB article, but each
failed. The error message I'm seeing is: "This patch
package could not be opened. Verify that the patch
package exists..." I included the relevant lines from
the Office XP setup log file from my latest reinstall
attemt, below. I appears that the 0-bytw MSD files are
the culprit. How do I get around this and get a clean
install of Office?
